Fashioned from high-polished sterling silver, this beautiful, Dagmar cross is fashioned with several holy images: from the left and then clockwise are Mary, the Mother of God, St. Basil the Great, St. John the Baptist and St. John Chrysostom. The image of Christ as ruler of the world is in the center of the cross; on the back is Christ crucified. This cross is associated with Queen Dagmar pronounced "dowmer" of Denmark. Margarethe of Bohemia, who became known as Queen Dagmar, was the wife of Valdemar II Valdemar the Victorious, King of Denmark from 1202-1241. Queen Dagmar is said to have died in childbirth. When her grave was opened in in 1690, the cross was found around her neck, and is believed to date around 1000 A.D. The original cross became part of the Royal Cabinet of Curiosities in 1695.
