The number of the wise men, or Magi, is uncertain: some traditions say there were three, some say twelve, others give yet different numbers. Western tradition offers the names of Melchoir, Gaspard and Balthazar. The Magi came from the East (possibly from Persia), seeking the newborn King. "Thy nativity, O Christ our God, has shown to the world the Light of wisdom; for by it, those who worshipped the stars were taught by a star to adore Thee, the Sun of Righteousness, and to know Thee, the Orient from on high. O Lord, glory to Thee!" (Orthodox Nativity hymn).
