The number of the wise men, or Magi, is uncertain: some traditions say there were three, some say twelve, others give yet different numbers. Western tradition offers the names of Melchoir, Gaspard and Balthazar. The Magi came from the East (possibly from Persia): "Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him." (Luke 2: 2). Led by the Natal Star, the Magi found Christ with His mother and "fell down and worshipped Him." (Luke 2:11).
