The Celtic cross evolved in the British Isles, with the earliest forms, dating from the seventh to ninth centuries, carved into large of slabs or rocks that lay on the ground. Some traditions suggest that the Celtic cross evolved from the "Chi-Rho" symbol of Christianity, the first two letters of "Christ" in Greek, popularized by St. Constantine, who made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire in the 4th century.
