This cross is associated with Queen Dagmar (pronounced "dowmer") of Denmark. Margarethe of Bohemia, who became known as Queen Dagmar, was the wife of Valdemar II (Valdemar the Victorious), King of Denmark from 1202-1241. When her grave was opened in in 1690, the cross was found around her neck, although some say that the cross came from the grave of Valdemar's sister, Richiza. The original cross, believed to date around 1000 A.D., became part of the Royal Cabinet of Curiosities in 1695.
